Test
Format
The IELTS consists of 4 sections- Listening,
Reading, Writing and Speaking. The following is
a brief look at the Ielts test format:
|
|
|
|
|
This section lasts about 25-30
minutes. It tests the whole
range of English skills from
'Survival English' to 'English
in Academic Settings'. The
speakers speak mostly in
'clipped and (mostly)precise'
pucca British accents, but don't
be surprised if you encounter
the odd Yorkshire man, Welshman
or Aussie!
|
This section consists of 3
reading passages that become
more and more difficult as you
progress along the reading test.
There are a total of 40-43
questions. The reading is
considered by many the most
difficult module in the Ielts
for good reason.
|
In this section, you are
required to handwrite two
assignments. The first one
involves describing graphic
information representing 'data',
'an object' or 'a process'. This
is a 20 minute task.
The second writing task is a
topical essay in which the test
taker is required to present
his/her perspective on a given
topic.
|
This is perhaps the most
intimidating section for
Nepalese students because one
actually has to sit down with
and converse with a native
speaker for about 12-15 minutes.
However, the scope and nature of
the interviews is simple and the
interviewers don't bite! They
are helpful and try their utmost
to put interviewees at ease.

Scoring
The IELTS is scored on a band score from 0.0 to
9.0. Increments are made in half points. Each
individual section is marked on this scale and
then the average of the four sections is taken
out for the final score of the test taker. A
reasonable score of 5.5 will see you getting
accepted by a majority of institutions in most
countries. However, top flight institutes may
require you to score in excess of the above
mentioned score.
Class Duration and Rotational Modules
